An injury has disqualified a West Indies veteran from competing in the 2024 ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup.
The West Indies have brought in left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy to replace the seasoned Jason Holder. Holder’s injury will keep him out of the competition.
The 32-year-old will need time to recuperate after hurting himself at the 2024 County Championship, so he will not be able to compete.
His substitute With eight wickets in five matches, McCoy led the West Indies A in wickets during their recent tour to Nepal.
Lead West Indies selector Desmond Haynes said that Holder’s loss will be felt, but that McCoy will have a chance to shine on the world stage in his place.
“Jason is a skilled member of our team. Anyone and everywhere will notice his absence, not just on the pitch. We hope to have Jason back with us shortly, fully recovered.”
Although it is disappointing to see Jason go, we have faith in Obed McCoy’s talents to step up. Obed has performed with amazing skill and promise, and this will be his chance to further display his abilities on a global platform. We think he’ll infuse the team with new, vibrant energy,” Haynes continued.
In addition to the main players, the co-hosts have announced five substitutes: Andre Fletcher, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh, and Matthew Forde.
Daren Sammy, head coach and winner of the Twenty20 World Cup thrice, has stated that the bench players can easily fit in with the main squad.
We count ourselves lucky to have players of this caliber and depth on our team. All of our reserve players are exceptional athletes who have excelled in a variety of game styles, but T20 in particular. Should the need arise, all of them are more than capable of integrating themselves into the squad with ease.”
